- Gifted with God-given natural resources, clean environment and rich historical relics, Siheung-si has a great potential to become the only ecological city around the Seoul metropolitan area. Situated in the west coast of Siheung, Oi-do has itself largely covered with many shell mounds and became the lovely place for the metropolitan citizens mainly thanks to its rich marine ecological environment. The origin of the name ‘Oi-do’ comes from that the shape of the Oi-do looks like ‘ear of crow.’ Shell mounds at Oi-do are the largest in the West sea region, the only relics that help tracing the traits of the South-North relations for the Neolithic culture in the peninsula. They are also recognized as being able to identify the past inland exchanges between the southern and northern part of the peninsula for the Neolithic culture as well as the adoption process of the mud flat zone to the West Sea during the Neolithic Age.
